Two pieces of great news for businesses investing in Solar

We’re pleased to report two recent pieces of great news for businesses that have invested – or are looking to invest – in mid to large-scale Solar PV projects.

Firstly, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has announced that solar panels can be moved from one roof to another without losing their feed-in tariff. Businesses will therefore be able to take rooftop solar panels with them should they move premises, without losing government-backed funding.

The change removes what is perceived to be one of the biggest barriers to investing in mid to large-scale Solar PV projects on commercial and industrial rooftops.

This is very welcome as far as our customers are concerned, because it means that they will now not have to pay any losses in subsidies when looking to relocate PV systems.

The second piece of great news is that Eric Pickles, secretary of state for communities and local government, has indicated that the permitted development threshold for rooftop solar panels installed on commercial property will be increased to 1MW.

The previous threshold had been 50kW, and the announcement will result in the removal of the red tape surrounding developments of less than 1MW in scale.

Solar rooftop projects in the UK have increasingly become of interest to investors because, from this month, the government will put an end to support for ground-mounted solar projects larger than 5MW.

Solar PV power generation in the UK soared by 93% year-on-year in 2014 and reached 3.9TWh, according to DECC.

Statistics show that that renewable energy generation increased by 20% in 2014 to 64.4TWh, with Solar PV reporting the greatest increase among all renewable energy types.

Businesses are increasingly turning to Solar PV solutions because it is a flexible, cost-effective energy solution that delivers an excellent return on investment and safeguards against carbon tax rises.
